Island Ironwood

Island Ironwood is an evergreen tree that reaches 25-50 ft. tall and 15-24 ft. wide with a fast growth rate. Island Ironwoods have beautifully textured peeling reddish gray or brown bark and shiny dark green evergreen leaves with lighter undersides. The flowers are woolly and white with many short whiskery stamens, forming creamy clusters in late spring and early summer before forming hard follicle fruit.

Accustomed to rocky slopes of the Channel Islands, this species is well adapted to rocky coastal canyons, chaparral, and oak woodlands with full sun and reasonably good soil drainage. This is a fantastic option for bank stabilization and hedges, and pairs well with Santa Cruz Island Buckwheat, St. Catherine’s Lace, Redflowering Buckwheat, Tree Poppy, and Catalina Cherry.
