Desert mint

Desert mint (also called Mountain Monardella or Mountain Pennyroyal) is a flowering perennial species widespread throughout mountain forests and sagebrush scrub of Northern California mountain ranges.

It is an upright to sprawling herb, and can be woody at the base. It typically grows 3 ft tall and wide, with smooth or hairy dark green foliage that release a strongly minty odor when touched. Throughout the summer, pale pink to lavender pom-pom shaped flowers bloom to the delight of butterflies, moths, and bats who relish in their nectar.

Desert mint is an easy plant to grow in the garden, and can be pruned in late fall or early winter to create a bushier plant, or left alone for a more sprawling look. They look best when spent blooms are deadheaded.
