Broadfruit bur-reed

Broadfruit bur-reed is a perennial that reaches a height of 2-7 feet and spreads via below-ground rhizomes.

Bur reeds are aquatic or marsh herbs with grass-like leaves, and small flowers densely crowded into globe like heads.

This species frequently occurs in flooded areas, where it helps with improving and maintaining water quality by absorbing nutrients and stabilizing waterlogged areas. The buried rhizomes provide a survival method for periods of drought or fire. The large seeds are an important food for waterfowl.
