California hedgenettle

California hedgenettle is an evergreen herbaceous perennial that grows 1 – 3 ft. tall with deep green, tongue-shaped foliage and stalks of purple/pink two-lipped flowers that bloom sequentially throughout spring, summer, and fall.

Like other members of the mint family, its foliage and flowers have a slight minty fragrance.

In the garden setting this species performs well in damp, partially shaded areas and forms a bushy, spreading ground cover, but is easily controlled. It is tolerant of clay soils, but not drought adapted. A great choice for bioswales, pond margins, and damp shady areas in need of a showy flowering plant!
